Do You Believe in Elections?

November 7, 2012

On the heels of the U.S. presidential election, artist Paul Ramírez Jonas raises questions about the relevance of the electoral process.

When Creative Time Reports asked me to respond to the U.S. election, I thought a lot about our faith in elections and the change they portend to bring. Over the past year, I have heard many arguments claiming the kind of change this nation needs will never be brought about by our current electoral process. Today, a day after the election, as this momentous process comes to a close, there still seems to be some doubt in the air— some people believe in elections, while some don’t. I decided to write an Op-Ed piece based on the famous editorial “Is There a Santa Claus?” that appeared in the September 21, 1897 edition ofThe (New York) Sun. The format and content has changed a little bit to fit our current discourse.
