Rebecca Solnit is a writer, historian and activist. Her thirteenth book, The Faraway Nearby, came out in June 2013. The previous twelve include A Paradise Built in Hell: The Extraordinary Communities that Arise in Disaster (2009); Storming the Gates of Paradise (2007); A Field Guide to Getting Lost (2005); Hope in the Dark: Untold Histories, Wild Possibilities (2004); Wanderlust: A History of Walking (2000); As Eve Said to the Serpent: On Landscape, Gender and Art (2001); River of Shadows (2003), and Eadweard Muybridge and the Technological Wild West (2003), for which she received a Guggenheim, the National Book Critics Circle Award in criticism, and the Lannan Literary Award. A contributing editor to Harper’s, she frequently writes for the political site Tomdispatch.com.
